M'SIA RECORDS THIRD HIGHEST SMS TRAFFIC IN ASIA PACIFIC

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia was ranked third in the Asia Pacific, in respect of the short messaging service (SMS) traffic processed during Christmas and New Year, with over one billion messages.
Acision, the world's leading messaging company, said Malaysia was placed third behind the leader, the Philippines, with 2.36 billion and Indonesia which chalked up 1.193 billion messages.
Malaysia recorded 1.075 billion messages, Acision said in a statement here today.
The company said with a 93 percent mobile penetration rate, the Malaysian mobile market is fast reaching saturation point and for the first time, broke the one billion mark for messaging traffic over a two-day period.
"This was a 13 percent increase in messaging growth compared to the same period last year," it added.
Acision reported a 40 percent increase in messaging traffic during Christmas and New Year across the Asia Pacific with a total of 6.37 billion messages.
The SMS formed a large majority of the traffic with 6.36 billion while 9.54 million multimedia messages service (MMS) were recorded.
"The festive season still remains a favourite high traffic period for operators and consumers alike. In addition, we are seeing MMS traffic picking up pace across the region," said the company.
It said MMS traffic is bound to increase as consumers become increasingly savvy in interacting with their personal blog sites and applications such as Facebook.
The company said a continued demand for robust and reliable SMS infrastructure and high quality end-to-end SMS solutions are expected in the near future. -- BERNAMA
